1997
We received a new visit of Per Oloff Bengtsson (PEO), escorted by a group of European people. We again gave them our selfless support. He did not give us, and we did not ask for, any kind of compensation.
The maps of the EZEIZA and PEREYRA IRAOLA sites that had been prepared by SIVERT AXELSSON and ULF ERIKSSON were used. They were later printed free of charge by PEO, and we contributed our efforts, vehicles and personal funds for their preparation.
We taught a course and organized a race, in October, at Compañía de Cascos Azules (CAECOPAZ – Blue Helmets Company), with the attendance of officers and noncommissioned officers from all over the American continent, at CAMPO DE MAYO –BUENOS AIRES Province.
November 3 to 10: two people attended the “South American Military Orienteering Clinic” organized by the Military Sports Commission of Brazil (CDMB), in Brasilia. The event was led by Lieutenant Colonel Sêrgio Brito, from the Brazilian Army.
Certified Physical Education Professor HÉCTOR FERNANDO BIANCHI, a graduate from INEF Dr. Romero Brest, participated in the “O-Ringen” competition held in VÄSTERBOTTEN, SWEDEN, paying for all his expenses himself. He was the first person to do so since the Federation was established. At present, he lives in the US. (In Sweden he received personal and technical support from Sivert Axelsson). Others would follow.
We continued our work with both the military and civilians.
1998
Through the provision of maps, compasses and other supplies, we participated in and collaborated with the development of the Topic: Orienteering Sport, taught by Professor Dr. HERMANN GALL, from Germany, within the “Sports for All and Adventure Sport in Nature Seminar” (“Seminario deporte para todos y deporte aventura en la naturaleza”).
The seminar was organized by Universidad de Flores (UFLO) and the National Sports Department, on March 9-13, and was attended by a large number of civilian Physical Education coaches.
From March 31 to October 27, we participated in the Orienteering Course of the Physical Training Specialization for Officers and Noncommissioned Officers of the Command Corps of the Argentine Army
We lectured at Universidad Abierta Interamericana, (UAI) on “Orienteering Sport”.
In Issue No. 4 of Spain’s “MAPA Y BRUJULA” magazine, professor O. Bianchi wrote an article, “ORIENTEERING IN ARGENTINA.”
On August 22, we organized a race for cadet students of the National Military School.
We participated in the first MERCOSUR ORIENTEERING COMPETITION – FEDERATIVE REPUBLIC OF BRAZIL CUP, at Fortaleza Santa Teresa, URUGUAY, by the Uruguayan Orienteering Association, with a map designed by MILTON ORREGO and the late Brigadier General D JOSE CALASANS (BRAZIL), an extraordinary advocate of sport.
The first steps for the creation of the SOUTH AMERICAN ORIENTEERING CONFEDERATION were taken. Its goals and strategies were defined, in order to achieve adequate development in the other South American countries. (An Agreement was drafted. Countries present: Uruguay, Brazil and Argentina.)
We attended with civilians, officers, NGOs, cadets and Army Aspirants.
After a meeting at ALEGRETE, BRAZIL, it was decided to establish an Orienteering Promotion and Development Commission in South America.
We attended the FIFTH STAGE OF THE GAUCHO ORIENTEERING CHAMPIONSHIP, held at Santana do Libramento – RS – BRAZIL and Rivera, Uruguay, and the FIRST ORIENTEERING CLINIC.
There we met the man who is considered to be the Father of Orienteering in Brazil, Colonel TOLENTINO PAZ DA SILVA, with whom we shared some dinners and long, very interesting technical talks.
We continued with clinics, classes and races, with civilians and the military.
1999
On January 22, we started the year with the visit of a member of the International Orienteering Federation, HIGINO ESTEVEZ, who delivered a talk at Club de Amigos. At the end, there was a race, on the premises, with a map we prepared for that purpose.
We briefed him on our actions, and invited him to a typical dinner attended by all the Federation members. He was also received by the President of the Argentine Olympic Committee (COA), with whom we shared a dinner.
We participated with a delegation of seventeen people, both civilian and military, in the “Second Edition of the MERCOSUR Championship” at the Santa Teresa Fort. Our delegation also welcomed a Captain of the Belgian Army who was doing a course in Buenos Aires.
On August 14, we conducted a clinic and race for the cadet students of the National Military School and students of the Physical Education Teacher Training Program from Instituto Superior Modelo Bella Vista.
We participated as speakers in the UPDATE SEMINAR FOR PHYSICAL EDUCATION OFFICERS (JORNADAS DE ACTUALIZACIÓN PARA OFICIALES DE EDUCACION FISICA), organized in October by the Command Unit of Military Institutes at CAMPO DE MAYO, Buenos Aires Province.
In October, we conducted a Course on Orienteering Mapping at the Service Officers School and the Noncommissioned Officers School of the Army, with the support of the Command Unit of Military Institutes and with the leadership of Lieutenant Colonel SÈRGIO BRITO, from the Brazilian Army.
Course attendees were sixty-to civilians and military officers who worked on the field and in the classrooms of the Noncommissioned Officers School, with twenty-one computers connected in a network. After all the work carried out by SÊRGIO BRITO, to close the course and with the printed map, a race was carried out for 110 people.
Due to the excellent work done and the dedication of SÊRGIO BRITO, who was in charge of managing the course, the Head of the General Staff of the Argentine Army sent his congratulations to his peer in BRAZIL.
We took part in the organization and performance of the National Contest “BASIS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF SPORTS IN NATURE AND OF THE ORIENTEERING RACE” at the Ezeiza National Center, organized by the NATIONAL SPORTS DEPARTMENT and our Federation, October 20-23, with the participation of delegates from all provinces, totaling 120 people. A race was organized; it was called the First National Championship of Orienteering Sport.
Theoretical and practical course, closing with a racing event in EZEIZA, with students (Physical Education professors) of Physical Education Teacher Training Program of UNIVERSIDAD DE FLORES (UFLO) (36 students) First Graduation Class.
We attended, with a delegation of civilians and military officers, the Third South American Orienteering Championship, in Florianopolis – Brazil.
On December 22-24 we again welcomed Per Oloff Bengtsson as our guest. We organized his stay and competitions; all his expenses were covered by us.
We continued teaching courses and seminars and organizing racing events with the army and with civilians.
2000
In September, we organized and delivered an Orienteering Course and Race, with the support of the Command of Military Institutes of the Army, at the Infantry School of the Argentine Army, for thirty Officers, NGOs of the Command Brigade Third School, and civilians from the area, in the city of Monte Caseros, Corrientes province, using a map of the terrain, prepared by First Lieutenant EF Dengl.
The Military Geographic Institute (IGM) prepared a map at the scale of 1:10,000, of the “Campo General Avalos” site, in Corrientes Province. We delivered copies to the Infantry School and the National Military School.
We participated in the FIFTH STAGE OF THE GAUCHO ORIENTEERING CHAMPIONSHIP 2000, at Alegrete, RS, BRAZIL, and attended the Meeting of South American Orienteering Federations.
Theoretical-practical classes at UNIVERSIDAD DE FLORES (UFLO), taught to students of the Physical Education and Sports Teacher Training Program. Second Graduation Class (48 students).
On June 24, we organized an introductory seminar with a race for 69 young scouts of the “Domingo Faustino Sarmiento” Scout Group, on the grounds and gardens of the National Military School.
Clinics for the military and cilivians continued.
2001
In July we delivered a course and organized a race using a map of the sports field and buildings of the Institute for eighty cadets of the Cadet Corps of the Military School, Liceo Militar General San Martín.
In February, we taught theoretical and practical Orienteering clinics and organized a race open to the public, based on the 1:10,000 map of EZEIZA.
On September 28, we carried out a clinic and race based on a map we prepared at the Physical Education Teacher Training School Instituto Superior de Educación Física No. 1 Doctor Enrique Romero Brets, with the assistance of fourth-year students of the PE program.
Professor Marcelo Rodríguez presented at the “Cristóforo Colombo” School his “Adventure School” project, including the topic of Orienteering Sport.
On October 24, we participated in the organization, jointly with the ARGENTINE MILITARY SPORTS FEDERATION, of the Orienteering Championship of the Armed Forces, as well as the Annual Orienteering Championship of the Army, at Campo de Mayo, Buenos Aires Province.
Theoretical and practical classes at UNIVERSIDAD DE FLORES (UFLO) were taught to students of the Physical Education Program, Third Graduation Class (32 students).
Our work with the Army and with civilians continued.
2002
We conducted fourteen introductory courses, including a race, with the participation of the first-year cadets of the National Military School, on a 1:10.000 map. At the end of the clinic, they participated in a competition.
We took part in the Fifth South American Orienteering Championship, at FAXINAL DO SOTURNO, RS, BRAZIL, on December 29-30, 2002.
We attended the First International Congress of Orienteering in School and the Orienteering Coach Course, in Santa María city, RS, BRAZIL, led by JOSE OTAVIO FRANCO DORNELLES. Two representatives of Argentina attended the Congress (L. Kleiman and O. Bianchi).
Jointly with Professor MARCELO RODRIGUEZ, we developed a course for Level 1 Coach Training as introduction to the orienteering sport in schools, with day races and urban training. Fifty-nine Physical Education Coaches of the “CROSS” Sports Specialization Center participated in this course, held in EL PALOMAR, Buenos Aires Province.
On March 14 to 17 we held the First Course on Orienteering Teaching Methodology, for the staff of RANCHO DE POPY, in the hills of Tandil, Buenos Aires Province. We drew a simple map based on an existing outline, and carried out a race.
Theoretical-practical class, including a racing event, with students from UNIVERSIDAD DE FLORES (UFLO) in the Physical Education and Sports Teacher Training Program, Fourth Graduation Class (31 students).
2003
At the Physical Education Teacher Training School Instituto Superior Modelo de Bella Vista, the South American Course on Orienteering-Specific Cartography was held on May 10-13. The course was taught by JOSE OTAVIO FRANCO DORNELLES (BRAZIL), who was invited at the request of SÊRGIO BRITO.
The Brazilian Orienteering Confederation granted diplomas and level 1 mapper license numbers.
We thank the President of the Institute, Prof. José Mauas, for the support we received.
On May 9, the speaker was greeted by the president of the Argentine Olympic Committee and the National Director of Sports.
We attended the SIXTH SOUTH AMERICAN ORIENTEERING CHAMPIONSHIP, at Minas de Camacua, RS, BRAZIL.
We participated as guests and attended, through the Argentine Olympic Committee, the Second Latin American Orienteering Congress and participated in the day and night competitions held in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, December 6 and 8. The event was superbly organized by the Colombian Orienteering Federation and the Colombian Olympic Committee. We participated with a group of representatives from Colombia, two Venezuelans, one Panamanian and one Argentinean.
The speakers included Colombian figures and Pedro Pasión, from Spain, and Tom Herremans, from Belgium, sent by the IOF.
We held twelve workshops, with racing events for cadets (332 students) and officers of the NATIONAL MILITARY SCHOOL, with a final test. Students and Professors of Physical Education Institutes and civilians from the area were invited.
Since 2003, Professor Ana María Vázquez, has carried out a series of projects, one of them called “INTRODUCTION TO ORIENTEERING SPORT FOR PEOPLE WITH MOTOR DISABILITIES IN ARGENTINA” as part of the course “VIDA INDEPENDIENTE” (“INDEPENDENT LIFE”) of FUARPE Foundation.
On October 20, Professor Ana María Vázquez conducted a second event with the FUARPE Foundation, including a workshop and a race.

Kindergarten, Escuela Infantil No. 2, five-year olds, reading and interpretation of simple routes.
Music School J P Esnaola, with students of second, third, fourth and fifth year of high school, theme: “Introduction to Orienteering Sport and Development,” including a map prepared by the Sports Field of Alvear Hospital cooperative center.
Theoretical and practical class, including an orienteering event, with Physical Education Professors in the Physical Education Degree of UNIVERSIDAD DE FLORES, Fifth Graduation Class (41 students).
2004
We attended the SECOND STAGE OF THE MERCOSUR ORIENTEERING CHAMPIONSHIP “JOSÉ DE CALASANS CARVALLO TROPHY,” at Quebrada de los Cuervos, URUGUAY, September 11-12.
On September 18, we carried out the “First University Orienteering Championship,” at the NATIONAL MILITARY SCHOOL.
December 16-19, a group of sixteen, including our students from the PE Program at Universidad de Flores (UFLO), attended the Seventh South American Orienteering Championship, in Santana do Livramento RS – Brazil.
We sponsored, supported the organization and led the event of the “ORIENTEERING SPORT SEMINAR” featuring speakers Per Oloff Bengtsson and Pentti Koponen, from Finland, on December 13 and 14, organized by L. Kleiman.
We carried out a theoretical and practical course and a race event with students of the Physical Education Teacher Training Program of UNIVERSIDAD DE FLORES (UFLO), Sixth Graduation Class (42 students).
We continued teaching the forty-five hour course for officers of the Physical Education Service of the Argentine Army.
On December 8, Prof. Ana María Vázquez conducted a third workshop and orienteering event with members of Vida Independiente Project of the FUARPE Foundation.
2005
We delivered two Introductory Courses on Orienteering at the MILITARY SCHOOL LICEO MILITAR GENERAL SAN MARTIN, for two groups of young school students, 12 to 14 years old.
With Prof. Ana M. Vázquez, we conducted two workshops at CLUB DE GIMNASIA Y ESGRIMA DE BUENOS AIRES (GEBA), for children. The first workshop was delivered at the General San Martin venue, for 30 children, and the second one at the Jorge Newbery venue, for 53 children.
On April 22, 23 and 24, we attended the First Stage of the BRAZILIAN ORIENTEERING CHAMPIONSHIP, in Sâo Joao de Polesine RS, Brazil.
With Prof. Marcelo Rodríguez, we conducted an Introductory Course on Orienteering Sport for fifty students of the Physical Education Teacher Training Program of Instituto Superior Modelo Bella Vista, Bella Vista City, Buenos Aires Province.
In August, Lic. Marcelo Rodríguez was designated professor of the “Orientación Terrestre” (Orienteering Sport) subject in the Physical Education Training Program of the Argentine Army.
On August 21, we crossed to Colonia, in Uruguay, with a delegation of seven orienteers, to participate in the Second Stage of the Uruguayan Orienteering Championship.
Professors Ana María Vázquez and Marcelo Rodríguez travelled to Seville, Spain, covering their own expenses, to participate in the Orienteering Sport Clinic, sponsored by the IOF, and in the “2005 Latin Country Cup,” organized by Asociación Deportiva de Orientación Lince (ADOL), FADO and FEDO.
We express our gratitude to the IOF, FEDO and ADOL.
From November 11 to November 18, we conducted a Seminar on “Introduction to Mapping for Orienteering in Schools and Clubs” , organized by Instituto Superior Modelo Bella Vista, Buenos Aires Province, and sponsored by our Federation and the International Orienteering Federation. The conduct of this activity was the responsibility of Major of the Uruguayan Army MILTON ORREGO, Secretary of the Uruguayan Orienteering Federation and IOF Event Advisor.
We thank MILTON ORREGO for his continued and selfless cooperation in the promotion and development of Orienteering in South America.
Introductory Course on Orienteering, at the Physical Education Institute of the Buenos Aires Gymnastics and Fencing Club (GEBA), for thirty fourth-year students.
Theoretical and practical course on Orienteering Sport for students of the Physical Education Program of UNIVERSIDAD DE FLORES (UFLO), delivered by O A Bianchi – E Fernández – M Rodríguez and A M Vázquez, Seventh Graduation Class (47 students).
We organized a family orienteering event in Palermo, in one of the member clubs, with the Palermo Golf map.
On September 6 and 7, we conducted an Introductory Course on Orienteering for Physical Education students and teachers at the Sports Training Institute (Instituto de Capacitación Deportiva), Victoria City, Buenos Aires Province.
We sponsored, attended and supported the course organized by L Kleimann, on Level 1 Mappers and Orienteering Event Organization, delivered by Adriano Bevilaqua, from BRAZIL.
On December 3 and 4, we attended, with a small group, the Eighth South American Orienteering Championship, in Sâo Martinho da Serra, RS Brazil.
We announced the FOURTH MEETING OF SOUTH AMERICAN ORIENTEERING FEDERATIONS, and a meeting of the presidents to complete the drafting of the CSO Statutes.
On December 8, we conducted an event, led by Ana M. Vázquez, called “Precision Orienteering” for twenty-five participants with motor disabilities, at CEDENA – EZEIZA.
