Orienteering in Argentina - Part three

1987 - 1997
In this stage, we have tried to summarize the efforts of many people and entities that were interested in knowing what this discipline was about, and later on set out to promote and disseminate the sport in the country.

From this point onwards, we provide a brief account of the actions conducted by all those who have selflessly devoted their time and effort to pursue shared goals.
Let this recollection serve as a recognition at the national, regional and international levels.

1987
After eleven years of scarce or no activity in Orienteering, with little knowledge of this discipline even in the sports and professional milieu, but with plenty of hope and above all, a big desire to learn and convey the basic technical aspects of our sport, a small group of members of the Argentine Army resumed, with renewed energy, the task within the Army and among civilians. They introduced briefing courses, clinics and races, with maps at the 1:20,000 scale and some magnified photocopies of 1:25,000 maps available from the Argentine Military Geographic Institute (Instituto Geográfico Militar - IGM).

1988/1990
The Orienteering Sport, under the name of “Orientación Terrestre,” was introduced as a curricular subject in the Training Program for Physical Education Officers of the Army, following the initiative of the leader of said training program, and relying on the experience gained by the pioneers and the bibliography, based on the translation we brought from France in 1973 and the book “La Course d’Orientation” (Health in Running) by Jean Claude Silvestre (French) and other documents we started to acquire, gather and, in some cases, translate.

1991
The arrival in Argentina of EUSEBIO GARCIA GOMEZ (Sebi) from Spain, sent by the Promotion and Development Committee of the International Orienteering Federation (IOF), somewhat changed the idea that some of us had regarding the activity we had undertaken. He conveyed to us the IOF’s interest in calling on new entities to join as members, based on the experience they had gained so far, and to that end, an entity had to be created.
We immediately set down to work.
He brought a map of PALERMO GOLF, magnified at the scale of 1:15,000, and prepared a simple map of the National Sports High Performance Center (CENTRO NACIONAL DE ALTO RENDIMIENTO DEPORTIVO - CENARD). These maps were used for organizing two racing events.
